There is no shortage of active threats to your cyber security – and viruses are among the most powerful. Although software developers and operating system manufacturers have come a long way in combating viruses, there is no denying that it still poses a very real danger to every Internet user. Needless to say, if a virus finds its way to your home computer, the consequences can be far-reaching. Everything from data theft to system failure is on the table, so if you still need to strengthen your digital defenses, now would be the perfect time to get started.

Install high quality antivirus software

Nowadays, an alarming number of people think that they no longer need dedicated antivirus software. Because today’s operating systems are equipped with a plethora of antivirus and security features, deceived individuals tend to regard specialized antivirus software as a thing of the past. But with the number of harmful viruses seemingly increasing by the day, it can be argued that there has never been a more crucial time to invest in high quality antivirus software.

Rather than considering the security features built into your operating system as a substitute for dedicated antivirus software, you should consider it as a supplement to the said software. Good antivirus software can work hand in hand with your operating system to keep you safe from an ever-increasing variety of viruses and other cyber threats. So, if your computer is currently without dedicated antivirus software, make sure you fix it twice.

Stay up to date with system updates

Many of us have an unfortunate habit of sitting on system updates and allowing them to accumulate. Since the time to install it often means we have to stop whatever we are doing on our computers, we tend to put system updates on the back burner without so much as a second thought.

However, a fair number of these updates are more important than you might think. In fact, many updates are designed to combat new viruses and other digital threats. This means that the longer you wait to install certain updates, the more vulnerable your computer is to the threats they have created to combat.

So, the next time you receive an update notification of your operating system or any of the programs you are using, perform the installation process without delay. This may involve stopping what you are doing and restarting your computer, but these minor inconveniences are worth the enhanced security that your computer will enjoy. If you can not trust yourself to manually install updates as they become available, consider enabling automatic updates and thus removing yourself from the equation.

Perform regular virus scans

Performing regular virus scans can be an effective way to detect and eradicate any viruses that have materialized on your computer before they have a chance to actually take root. This can be done through your operating system or dedicated antivirus software. For good measure, however, you may want to consider performing separate scans: one through your operating system and one through your antivirus software.

In many cases, virus scans will not interfere with your activities on the computer and can be carried out comfortably in the background. You can either perform these scans manually or schedule them to take place at a convenient time. In the interest of thoroughness, schedule at least one system-wide scan per day.

Be careful with emails

One of the most effective ways to avoid viruses is also one of the easiest – be careful with emails. To begin with, make a point of ignoring messages from unknown and / or suspicious senders. Second, do not open any attachments found in emails from people you do not know. Even if an email claims to be from a friend, family member or colleague, avoid clicking on any links or opening any attachments if anything appears over the message, as there is a chance that a third party got hold of your contact list.

Even with all the advances in cyber security made over the past decade, viruses still pose a common threat to all computers – and indeed, all Internet-enabled devices. So, whether you have been repeatedly victimized by viruses in the past or you have been fortunate enough to never deal with one, protecting your computer from viruses should be high on your list of priorities. Fortunately, with the tips outlined above, keeping your computer virus-free should be within your capabilities.

Install a popup blocker

As you go about your daily online life, many attacks occur through your browser. Hackers can enter your computer with just one click on the wrong ad or link. It would be best to have an ad or pop-up blocker to keep your computer’s data safe. This will prevent any pages from automatically opening that you do not want.

Never click, open or download anything if you do not know who sent it. This is very important when it comes to emails.

Carefully surf the internet

Most of the time the viruses come from the internet. So you need to use a secure network to browse the internet. Use “HTTPS” instead of “HTTP” Also, do not click on untrusted links.
